An 'i' to the future of BMW

BMW’s new ‘i’ sub-brand is destined for a public unveiling at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show, where an initial two model line-up will be revealed in concept guise. Welcome the BMW i3 and i8.

The extended range of cutting-edge, purpose-built electric, hybrid and range extender-powered models will initially consist of the compact four-seat i3 and more sporting two-plus-two i8 performance flagship.

Previously known under the internal working title Megacity Vehicle, The four-seat BMW i3, is a pure electric hatchback that will be sold with the option of a petrol range-extending engine. This acts as a generator to provide it with a range similar to small cars on sale today.
The BMW i8 will get a snug two-plus-two interior layout and come with petrol-electric hybrid drive. The model advances the ideas first hinted at by the 2009 EfficientDynamics concept car, which won much acclaim for design and concept.

Planned for a 2013 on sale date, The i3 and i8 shall be assembled on a dedicated line at BMW’s Leipzig manufacturing base in Germany. Lets just hope the models make it to production with at least some of the visual flare of these two inspiring concepts.
